What can be a more hopeful and promising sign than spring flowers? They tell us that warmer weather is on the way, and that we are ready to be spending more time outside. Just looking at these flowers makes us feel better and ready for good things to come. The best flowers for spring are ones that are colorful, fragrant and pleasing to the eye. The first flowers that usually pop their little heads up are crocus. They can be all different colors. You can get some really small ones as well as some that are medium size. They are really a no-brainer for planting. They are little bulbs that you plant fairly shallow. Most spring bulbs should be planted in the fall and crocuses are no exception. Many times gardeners plant crocus bulbs and other bulbs at the same time. That way they can get an idea of how the garden will look come spring by the design in planting.
Some other spring flowering bulbs are daffodils, hyacinths and tulips. Daffodils and hyacinths are very low-maintenance. You can easily plant these around the crocus. Tulips are also easy to plant, but if you are in an area of squirrels there is a new problem. Squirrels and other animals will generally leave the daffodils and hyacinths alone. But they love to dig up tulip bulbs! You will probably need to take some precautions here. You can put some webbing over the tulip bulbs or some other protective covering. The crucial time is after you plant them in the fall. That is when the squirrels are looking for food and are digging everywhere. So if you plant tulip bulbs, the fall is the time to keep a close watch. Some gardeners plant these very near the house for that reason--to keep an eye on them. Other gardeners have been known to plant bushes and other plants with thorns or stickers nearby to deter the squirrels. But be aware that squirrels can be very determined!
