Best flowers for fall

Fall is such a wonderful time of year in the garden, so many interesting flowers bloom in the fall and provide outstanding color. While chrysanthemums might be one of the more popular fall garden flowers, there are so many other choices. Asters are an excellent choice for fall blooms, they will start to bloom in late August and continue blooming till frost. They come in many shades of blue, pink. purple and white. Asters are also hardy in zones 4-9. Another outstanding fall performer for the fall garden are Sedum, it is one of the easiest plants to grow and will give you great color in the fall. The only real problem with Sedum's is that deer love them so if you live in an area with deer problems this might not be the plant for you. Hardiness for this excellent fall flower is 3-9.

No fall garden would be complete with out Goldenrod. Unlike many of the older varieties of Goldenrod, some of the new ones will give you lots of fall blooms on very nice plants. Hardy in zone 4-9. Russian Sage will give you more of that cool color flowers for the fall garden. It has a blue almost purple looking bloom and is usually about 5 feet tall making it perfect for the back of the garden bed. Its silvery foliage, and lovely smell make it an excellent fall flower. Hardy in zones 5-9.Mexican sage is another of the sage plants that give excellent fall color and since these beauties are so tough they are excellent for the fall garden.

These tall bloomers produce from late summer till frost in lovely yellow blooms, some even have beautiful dark colored centers to offset the yellow petals. They are hardy in zones 4-9. Helenium, are a member of the daisy family and bloom in fall. Another tall bloomer for the back of the garden, these flowers come in the yellow to orange range and will bloom in late summer. They attract lots of butterflies and are fairly drought tolerant, once established. Hardy in zone 4-8. Anise Hyssop, adds more of that lavender color that looks so good with all the yellows of fall. These are tall growers with an interesting scent, a sort of licorice smelling flowers make them interesting to grow and deserving a place in your garden. Hardy in zone 4-9. An excellent vine for fall color is the sweet autumn clematis, it will be covered in fall blooms of white flowers. This vine is very aggressive and will need constant pruning to keep in under control, but if you have room plant this vine. It provides late season nectar for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds love this vine and will often nest in it. Hardy in zones 4-9.

The last plant to add to the fall garden is a shrub Witch Hazel. This shrub has pretty yellow flowers and even add to the fall garden with their leaf color. While the name seems appropriate to fall with Halloween the name has nothing to do with witches, but the name still reminds us of fall. Hardy in zone 3-8.
