A housewarming gift should do just that – warm the heart of the person receiving it and help make their new house or apartment feel like home. It should also be useful! After all, a home requires a lot of items to feel complete, and furniture is just the beginning.
Hands down, one of the most effective and fun housewarming gifts is a gift basket. There are so many varieties of baskets, and tons of ways to go about making one. The first step is to choose a theme for the basket. A popular one is the spice-rack theme. Giving an actual spice rack – perhaps one fully loaded with spices – is an option. However, unless the person receiving it has specifically asked for one, it might not be a good idea to give an actual rack (choosing one is a personal decision, and falls more under the category of house fixtures than plain old gifts.). They might not like it.
A basket takes the pressure off of both the giver and receiver of the gift. Making a spice basket is simple, and requires the following items. First, a woven basket is a good base for the present. These can be purchased quite cheaply. Not only will this hold the spices and look pretty, but the receiver can use it for other purposes after they open it (they can “re-gift” it, use it for storage, etc.). Next, it’s time to fill the basket with goodies, that is, spice-oriented products. One can go to a supermarket or grocery store and head to the baking aisle. They can then fill the basket with cinnamon, nutmeg, paprika, chili powder, and an assortment of other fun items. It is not a bad idea to include a spice grater and some recipes.
The basket can then be wrapped with wrapping paper or clear cellophane. Of course, a spice basket is just one option. Perhaps the person getting their home is a big baking fan. A basket can be filled with small baking pans, measuring cups, baking mixes, and even some jars of ingredients. A fun thing to do is put the dry ingredients for say, chocolate chip cookies, in a glass jar. Giving instructions with that (it might just need to have eggs and milk added, and then be baked) will ensure that the person receiving it will have some gooey treats that will cost them very little work.
A house isn’t complete without some fun products to use in the bathroom. After all, decorating a house and moving in are hard work. So making a gift basket with bathroom goodies is a thoughtful and useful way to show one’s best wishes to the person receiving this item. Filling a basket with a terrycloth robe, slippers, some bath salts, various soaps, a soap dish, liquid hand soap, lotions, and other items is a practically guaranteed win. Throwing in a rubber ducky or some fun soaps that have little flowers or the like inside of them (translucent soaps can be very fun) will be make it extra special.
